This paper proposes amendments to the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001 (DIRA) and the Dairy Industry Restructuring (Raw Milk) Regulations 2012 (Raw Milk Regulations), largely arising from the recent review of the state of competition in dairy markets. This Risk Profile (RP) considers Bacillus cereus in dairy products intended to be consumed as whole foods, including milk (raw, processed, concentrated, powder), cream, butter, yoghurt, cheese, ice cream and foods where dairy is the main ingredient (e.g. custard). The potential conveyors, pathways for the spread of foot and mouth disease through the dairy industry in New Zealand, and their significance, are described. The scientific literature is reviewed to determine the amount of foot and mouth disease virus present and its survival in milk, the impact of control measures such as pasteurisation, and the role of the dairy industry in previous outbreaks of foot and mouth disease throughout the world.
This report defines the baseline of levels of contamination of sulphite-reducing clostridia (SRC) in New Zealand nutritional dairy powders. It also evaluates whether or not routine testing of dairy powders for SRCs in New Zealand, and setting of microbiological criteria, are required for regulatory assurances.
An investigation into the effect of milk time and temperature storage variables, together with internal mould ripening, on the survival and growth of Listeria monocytogenes during soft cheese production.

Project to assess the relative safety of analogous cheeses made from raw or pasteurised milk.
In April 2014 MPI conducted targeted surveillance of milk from 20 dairy farms to assess the safety of milk from animals potentially exposed to farm land used for the bioremediation of solid wastes from petrochemical mining. The surveillance study identified that only very low levels of some of the chemical compounds or minerals that were tested for were found and these did not represent a risk to consumers.
